Penfield Auctions was founded in Lemmon, South Dakota in 1908 as a livestock marketing firm by B.L. Penfield. His son, Earl Penfield graduated from American Auction College in January of 1936. Earl Penfield was one of the organizers and a Charter Member of the National Auctioneers Association. He was inducted into the National Auctioneers Hall of Fame in 1978 after 42 years as a leader in his field.

Earl's son, Bob started selling livestock at the family owned auction market in 1945 at the age of 15 on a regular weekly basis. He conducted his first household auction by himself at the age of 17. When Bob bought Home Base Auction Market in Bowman, North Dakota at the age of 27, he was the youngest market owner in the United States. Bob was elected to the Board of Directors of the NAA in 1961 and after that 3 year term was elected 2nd Vice President. He served as President of the NAA from 1968 to 1969. Bob invited the NAA to hold their 1974 annual convention in Medora, North Dakota, and served at that event as Convention Chairman. Since Bob came home from the Army in 1955, they have sold over 100,000 acres of agricultural land at auction. They have also marketed over 1,000 homes and about 150 commercial properties at public auction during that period. |
